Google updates the way they do things fairly often, with major updates several times a year and 500 or so minor updates. Their latest major update was in February and codenamed Panda. In this case, Panda has been rolled out globally and then updated again. Typically, these stronger updates get a lot of discussion going and can completely change the way that users interact with the web.
Yahoo added search direct in order to provide you the hottest trends and information without having to click the search button. It was supposed to make things faster for you but the response has been underwhelming. It has been perceived as an expected feature, not the vital improvement that Yahoo was touting.
